New Study Says Dog Owners Would Rather Spend Time With Pets Over People

Almost half of all American dog owners says they prefer hanging out with their pups over social events with friends.

Link AKC, creators of smart collars for dogs, examined 2,000 dog owners in America and found that nearly half of owners skipped out on social events with friends to specifically get a bit more quality time with their furry friend.

That's understandable - multiple studies have shown the benefits of owning a dog, from mental health, to alleviating stress. Six-in-ten survey takers said their dog takes care of them in some way. According to the study, 82 percent of all dog owners noticed an improvement in their life thanks to their furry friend. Another 20 percent said their dog helped them get through a tough breakup. Four in ten say their pet got them through the loss of a loved one.

Herbie Calves, Link AKC CMO says the mental health benefits of having a dog have a big impact on people's lives. “People consider their dogs members of their family and are looking for ways to connect and interact with them on a deeper level.”

“Dog ownership is a great responsibility but also comes with great physical, emotional and mental benefits,” said Calves. “Our goal at Link AKC is to provide dog parents with useful, insightful information to give them peace of mind that they are doing what is best for their dog, who in exchange do so much for them.”
